Thousands of divorcing couples can get cheaper, quicker and less stressful post-divorce settlements

A West Midlands social enterprise that supports children in separated families steps in to a new era this month as its moves under the umbrella of England’s leading family mediation provider.

West Midlands Family Mediation has operated from its Hagley Road, Birmingham, premises since 2015. Staff there  say joining with National Family Mediation (NFM) means parents, children and grandparents affected by family breakdown will now benefit from national network expertise.

“Local families will be able to make post-divorce settlements more quickly, cheaply and with less stress than if they slog out their differences in a court room,” says Director, Liz Yates.

“When a family breaks down those involved need to make arrangements for children, money and property. Census figures indicate some 279,000 people living in the West Midlands have undergone some form of separation or divorce. Family mediation can help you reach agreements about these things whether you were married, co-habiting or in a civil partnership.”

West Midlands Family Mediation is now joining forces with National Family Mediation, England and Wales’ largest provider of family mediation.

“We are excited about these changes because they mean local families can look forward to an even better service from our non-profit professionals, " Liz Yates added. "We will continue to deliver mediation for local families from our Birmingham office but we will also be able to extend our services across the whole of the West Midlands, and all under the National Family Mediation umbrella.

“There will be huge benefits of being part of the country’s leading family mediation network. There's the additional expertise, resources and economies of scale which also means we can keep costs down for our clients.”

Jane Robey, CEO of National Family Mediation added: “When a couple separates, there are huge issues to address surrounding things like parenting, property and money. It’s sadly become the norm for couples to go to a lawyer, and spend huge sums of money in a court battle that sees them and their children end up much poorer.

“Family mediation is a short, time-limited intervention that helps people resolve all the legal and emotional aspects of a divorce or separation.

“It’s terrific to welcome NFM Midlands to the national fold, and we look forward to helping families across the West Midlands to face brighter futures.”

Following a change in the law in 2014, it is now compulsory for separating families to consider family mediation before they can apply for a court order over post-separation parenting, finance or property. Legal Aid is available for family mediation.
